Heart of it all Photography bio picture
  • Heartfelt Welcome!!

Hello! This is me! I started my photography business in Turkey. I had a love for photography and had some wonderful friends willing to sit in front of my lens while I learned more about my style of photography. I wanted something to watermark my images, so I went with the basic plan ... initials. m.j.c. photography.

To this day, I still like the simplicity of the name, but there are so many people with the same initials and already branded their photography in that way.

A few months back I attended a Shot Party in St. Louis. I heard 2 of my favorite photographers speak at this conference, Bobbi + Mike. They were awesome, just like I knew they would be. They spoke of making memories or heirlooms for people. That one day their client's great grand children would look back at their photography and see them as they were when they were young, free, in love ...

They didn't necessarily say something that I didn't already know, but they said it in a new way. In a way that just struck me ... this is ALL about the client. These pictures showcase the LOVE people have for each other. Whether they are engagement , a newborn baby , family pictures, senior pictures, it doesn't matter. The person (or people) in front of the lens is the HEART of a family.

I went home that night thinking ... and thought some more ...

Then I thought, the heart of it all ... is YOU!

I promise that when we're together for a photo shoot ... you're my family. We aren't going to just sit in front of the lens and smile. We are going to go out and have fun! We are going to pretend that you are in a reality TV show and YOU are the star. We're going to photograph you having fun with your family or significant other. We are going to have an amazing time together and make memories that you will keep forever.

Cleveland Rock-n-roll Marathon

Taking a moment to write a personal blog post. 🙂

Last Sunday, 6 Oct 13, my husband, brother, and I all ran our first 1/2 marathon!! It was extremely hard and by far the biggest physical challenge I’ve ever experience … and yes, that includes child birth! 😛

I was so lucky to have such an amazing support team with me.  First of all, my amazing husband.  When I signed us up, I put all 3 of us down the same time frame.  I wanted to start together and then we could all run off and do our own thing.  My husband is 6’4”, while I’m 5’4” … needless to say it’s very easy for him to out run me.  Well, he didn’t.  Not once.  He ran with me the entire time.  There was a point (mile 7, I believe) that I decided to stop, BIG MISTAKE.  I never really recovered after that. I’d get a 1/4 mile in and then stop .. sometimes less. My legs felt like they weighed a million pounds. Everything hurt. I was moving at an 11:40 pace, and yet he stayed with me. <3

My amazing parents traveled down from MI to watch our daughter while we ran and to cheer us on. My mother has ALWAYS been ‘that Mom.’ You know, the one in the stands cheering so loud that everyone on the team knows that your mom has arrived. 😉  Alex and I may not be in high school anymore, but things haven’t changed. She was on the side lines, looking through the thousands of people, trying to find us, and cheering so loudly that I heard her before I actually saw her!   My father took video and pictures for us … and of course lots of Abby snuggles.

I didn’t run in the time frame that I wanted too … but I did it. I finished a 1/2 marathon!!  I learned a lot and now have a time to beat!!  J and I finished in 2:34:53.  I had been aiming for 2:20:00ish.  On the one hand, I’m very happy with that time because I walked a lot and that’s still a respectable time.  But on the other hand … how much better would my time have been if I hadn’t walked!?!   It was so frustrating not to be able to pick up my legs and run … but like I said. I learned a lot, and know what I need to do for my next 1/2. 🙂

From the bottom of my heart, I couldn’t have done it without my family! I love them and am so grateful to have them in my corner!

Here are a few iPhone pictures from our adventure.

It’s a long story, but we had an issue at the race. The amazing people at the Rock-n-Roll race gave us the VIP treatment until it was resolved. 🙂

After praying, we had AMAZING weather for the whole race. It was the perfect temp, clear skies, simply amazing. Until we started home ... then the bad weather rolled in!

~ S Family ~

I’d love to introduce you to the Shaw Family.  This is Katie and Max, an adorable mother and son.  But there are a few people missing from these pictures … for 1, Eva isn’t due for another 3 weeks.  Dad is currently serving our great country overseas and won’t be home in time for the birth. But with any luck, we’ll be able to create something really special to help Dad feel included.  Katie is so beautiful, love these images … why couldn’t I have looked like this when I was pregnant!! <3

Happy 1st Birthday Brooklyn!

I first took Brooklyn’s picture when she was 13 days old. And now … she’s turning 1! *sniff* Where did this year go??  When I met Brooklyn, she had big chubby cheeks and bright blue eyes … well … some things don’t change.  😉  Now she’s walking, loves to chow down on Mac-n-cheese, dances like a pro, and is still the cutest blondie ever.  Happy 1st birthday Brooklyn!!

What a beautiful little girl!! Her mom did a great job making a magical place for photographs!! 🙂

Amy & Chris

I am so beyond in love with these images!  There are just some people that you immediately connect with. Amy was that bride. She was all smiles, she was warm and welcoming, someone I want to be friends with. On top of that, I have never had a bride check on me as much as Amy. Of course the day of her wedding was 100+ temps, she asked me several times if I needed water and made sure I had dinner. Umm … it’s YOUR wedding day! I’m good! Thanks!! She’s just that type of person.

Then it comes time for pictures, and she pretty much was willing to do anything and everything I asked. Sit on a tree? Okay.  Lay in the grass? Sure.  Take off your shoes and go running? Why not?

I could talk about Amy and Chris all day … but I’d rather just show you. So in love with these images!!

Let’s start with a little detail … loved the flowers!

Mr. Cutie pants!

This was totally Amy’s idea. I just happily went with the flow!

How cute is Amy?? Don’t all girls like to twirl?

Don’t look. Not yet … not yet … not yet …

Okay, now.

Oh Amy … you’re stunning.

Photographer favorite.

Groomsmen on the far right … I love you!

Again … stunning.

Another favorite.

Love sisters!

The perfect end to the perfect day.

Rose + Mike

This is a session called ‘trash the dress.’  Trash the dress is when a bride puts on her wedding dress and does things she would never do on her actual wedding day.  Play in the dirt, lay in the water, paint a picture … whatever she dreams up.

A few people don’t understand why someone would want to do this.  That’s understandable.  You spend a lot of time and money picking out the perfect dress for your wedding … why would you then want to turn around and do something that could ruin it?  This is what my friend Laurie had to say,

My dress is still in the box, I have only boys and even if I had a girl and most girls want to pick their own unless they are super sentimental… I would rather have had beautiful (and fun) images taken in my dress then leave it in the dry cleaning box like I have for the last 11 years.

Try to look past the fact that her wedding dress a mess.  Try this … look at how much fun she had.  Think about the fact that they didn’t have the best experience with their photographer on their actual wedding day and wanted some beautiful pictures for just the two of them.

Look at the fact that her husband, Mike, planned this whole thing for her.  This is a session that Rose has been interested in for a while, so for their 6th wedding anniversary, Mike took action.  He booked me, hired someone to do Rose’s hair and make-up, bought paint and canvas, found childcare for their kids … he even went to the store and bought a new foundation and mascara per the suggestion of the make-up artist.  Is that not the most amazing husband and anniversary present?? Big gold star for Mike!

I was so nervous about this session. After all, this is a 1 time shoot. There are no re-shoots with a messed up wedding dress.  But I think the overall outcome is stunning! I am very proud and in love with these images.  Next time I’m getting a protective covering for my camera so I can get into the fun! 🙂

The beautiful bride.

The reason we’re here …

Seriously, isn’t Rose stunning?

Photographer favorite!

Good thinking … wouldn’t want to get the dress dirty. 😉

Mike’s favorite part of the whole day. 😉
