Heart of it all Photography bio picture
  • Heartfelt Welcome!!

Hello! This is me! I started my photography business in Turkey. I had a love for photography and had some wonderful friends willing to sit in front of my lens while I learned more about my style of photography. I wanted something to watermark my images, so I went with the basic plan ... initials. m.j.c. photography.

To this day, I still like the simplicity of the name, but there are so many people with the same initials and already branded their photography in that way.

A few months back I attended a Shot Party in St. Louis. I heard 2 of my favorite photographers speak at this conference, Bobbi + Mike. They were awesome, just like I knew they would be. They spoke of making memories or heirlooms for people. That one day their client's great grand children would look back at their photography and see them as they were when they were young, free, in love ...

They didn't necessarily say something that I didn't already know, but they said it in a new way. In a way that just struck me ... this is ALL about the client. These pictures showcase the LOVE people have for each other. Whether they are engagement , a newborn baby , family pictures, senior pictures, it doesn't matter. The person (or people) in front of the lens is the HEART of a family.

I went home that night thinking ... and thought some more ...

Then I thought, the heart of it all ... is YOU!

I promise that when we're together for a photo shoot ... you're my family. We aren't going to just sit in front of the lens and smile. We are going to go out and have fun! We are going to pretend that you are in a reality TV show and YOU are the star. We're going to photograph you having fun with your family or significant other. We are going to have an amazing time together and make memories that you will keep forever.

Rose + Mike

This is a session called ‘trash the dress.’  Trash the dress is when a bride puts on her wedding dress and does things she would never do on her actual wedding day.  Play in the dirt, lay in the water, paint a picture … whatever she dreams up.

A few people don’t understand why someone would want to do this.  That’s understandable.  You spend a lot of time and money picking out the perfect dress for your wedding … why would you then want to turn around and do something that could ruin it?  This is what my friend Laurie had to say,

My dress is still in the box, I have only boys and even if I had a girl and most girls want to pick their own unless they are super sentimental… I would rather have had beautiful (and fun) images taken in my dress then leave it in the dry cleaning box like I have for the last 11 years.

Try to look past the fact that her wedding dress a mess.  Try this … look at how much fun she had.  Think about the fact that they didn’t have the best experience with their photographer on their actual wedding day and wanted some beautiful pictures for just the two of them.

Look at the fact that her husband, Mike, planned this whole thing for her.  This is a session that Rose has been interested in for a while, so for their 6th wedding anniversary, Mike took action.  He booked me, hired someone to do Rose’s hair and make-up, bought paint and canvas, found childcare for their kids … he even went to the store and bought a new foundation and mascara per the suggestion of the make-up artist.  Is that not the most amazing husband and anniversary present?? Big gold star for Mike!

I was so nervous about this session. After all, this is a 1 time shoot. There are no re-shoots with a messed up wedding dress.  But I think the overall outcome is stunning! I am very proud and in love with these images.  Next time I’m getting a protective covering for my camera so I can get into the fun! 🙂

The beautiful bride.

The reason we’re here …

Seriously, isn’t Rose stunning?

Good thinking … wouldn’t want to get the dress dirty. 😉

Mike’s favorite part of the whole day. 😉

Sweet Emily is Home!

The McNeil family is on the blog 1 more time!  They are my good friends, so I’m so glad I got to be part of this whole experience!  From their last family session as 3, to the birth of sweet Emily, to a few newborn shots.

Lifestyle sessions are becoming more and more of a passion to me. I love being able to see families in their own environment, being real. Spending quality time together, doing what they love with their loved ones. I’m so happy to be able to share these moments with them … and with you.

Big brother is passionate about several things … trains, trucks, the color blue, and now … his baby sister. He’s already a wonderful big brother.

Jeremy is the most loving and protective dad … it’s really sweet to watch them together.

I just want to snuggle her all day.

Toes!

Good morning, Sweetheart!

Who doesn’t love a man who does the dishes?

Okay sweetie, I get the hint. I’ll get out of your hair and let you have some snuggle time with your family.

Waiting on Baby E …

Meet the M family.  Technically Baby Emily is already here and blogged … but I still want to show off these beautiful images.

Daniel is so excited to be a big brother. He’s already devoted and protective of baby E. 🙂

*sigh* Love!

Such a beautiful family. I’m proud to call them my friends and so grateful to be on this ‘adventure’ with them.

Sweet Emily

Okay, so I haven’ blogged in forever.  Slacker alert … big time! Sorry about that. But let me say … this is a GREAT post to begin again!

Backing up a little.  Almost a year ago, I met Jen through my business.  She hired me to do family photos of her sweet family of 3.  She picked me up at my house, giving us more time to talk and get to know each other.  Her sweet Daniel is only about 3 weeks older than Abadaba.  After talking and shooting, we decided to get together for a play date.  To say the kids hit it off together would be an understatement.  They are now BFFs and ask for each other on a regular basis.

Photographing a birth has been on my photography ‘bucket list’ for a while.  So when Jen announced that she was pregnant, I knew this would be my best chance if I asked.  Took me almost 7 months to get the courage to ask Jen and Jeremy if I could be apart of this extremely personal experience.  I was thrilled when they said yes!

It was … amazing.  I feel like I’m over using that word, but seriously … what an experience.  I was able to witness the birth of a beautiful baby.  I watched as a life came into the world.  I was able to be there for the first cry and to see the look on Mom and Dad’s face when the doctors placed Emily on Mom’s chest.  I mean … how else can you explain that but amazing.

Jen was a true Army wife … calm, strong, and through the whole thing, composed and beautiful.  She made delivering a baby look easy.

I could go on and on about Jen and her beautiful family or the actual experience … but I think I’ll just get to the pictures. I’m so in love with these images!

Jeremy was so calm and a great support!

She’s here!

Welcome to the world, Emily!!

… she’s perfect …

Yep, she’s got him hooked already.

… love …

Project 52 : Idle

Week 23 | Idle

Man … I have NOT been idle. Anything BUT really … hence the blog being neglected.

This picture is kind of a stretch for the theme … but go with me.  This is my friend Jen. She’s expecting her little girl by the end of July.  The nursery is done, clothes are bought, she has all the essential baby times from her first child … so she’s just waiting. Time to sit back, try to get some rest, and wait for her baby Emily.

Check out Ms. Megan‘s blog for more on this theme.
